Putting Christ Back in Christmas

Posted by Ashley Lester on

This is the most wonderful time of the year! A time where we get together with family and friends, eat wonderful treats and give gifts that were very thoughtfully purchased and wrapped with love. There are parties and plays and get-togethers. There is so much to this season that often we can forget why we celebrate it: the Christ child who came into this world as an innocent helpless baby to save mankind from his sins. We want to come alongside you in what can be the most chaotic time of year and provide a couple of simple tools that will help your family carve out time to remembering God's word and why we celebrate Christmas.

Beginning the Sunday before Advent we will have Family Advent Bags that will include Advent calendars and stones for you touchstone jars available for each family to take home.

Each morning around the breakfast table, or each evening before bed your children can open the tab for the day on their calendar. Inside you will find scripture. Each scripture points back to Jesus and the reason for the season. There are also wonderful ideas of ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others by sharing the love of Jesus and the story of Christmas. Along with the Advent calendar, we will also have a bag of stones for you to use with your touchstone jar that correlates with each week of Advent. Each Sunday you will read the scripture that correlates with the focus of that week together as a family. After reading the scripture you can talk together about how Jesus represents the focus of that week. When you are all through you can pray together as a family and then place the stone that goes with that week into your jar. On Christmas Eve after all the festivities are done and you are winding down for the evening you can come together as a family and read the Christmas story. Once you read the story you can place the last stone in the jar, which is white and represents the Christ child. When you place the stone in the jar you can sing the song Silent Night, which can be found in the back of your Advent calendar. After singing you can end with a prayer thanking God for sending His son Jesus to be the light of the world.

What a wonderful way to keep our hearts focused on the reason we celebrate Christmas don’t you think? Our hope and prayer for each of you and your families is that you wouldn’t get caught up in what the world tells us is important, but that you would be able to focus your hearts and minds in on the true meaning of Christmas, and celebrate all that God has done through sending His son Jesus.

Pick up your Family Advent Bag in the Education Building Welcome Center or the first floor of the Student Ministries Building. Merry Christmas and God bless you and your family this holiday season.
