Central's Thirty Days of Prayer Challenge

Posted by Dr. Jan Davis on

We begin thirty days of prayer as a congregation. God’s Holy Spirit has been leading and guiding us and we are about to embark on an important project that will greatly impact our future. For affirmation, we must to turn to God in prayer.

As a church, we ask, “Lord, what do you want to do through us?”

I believe God wants us to place a much higher emphasis on worship. Disciples are made and strengthened in the context of weekly community worship. Followers of Christ are then sent out into the world better equipped to be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus Christ all week. We encourage people of all ages (including children and youth) to attend weekly worship in either the contemporary or classic venue. Our goal is to enhance the worship experience in both the Activities Center and Sanctuary.

In order to enhance the worship experience for the classic service, church leadership feels led to preserve and improve the beautiful, historic, iconic Dickson Street sanctuary. The Church Conference approved the building committee’s recommendations for a new music suite and modifications to the chancel. The congregation voted to move forward with construction drawings and a capital campaign on June 27, 2017. We now embark on a fund-raising campaign to raise $3,575,000 dollars for this effort.

Only with God’s blessing and the Spirit’s leadership will we fulfill God’s desire for us. We seek God in fervent prayer. Each individual in our church has a part in our future. I ask you to pray daily between July 28 and August 27 (commitment Sunday), “Lord, what do you want to do through me?”. We will mail handy “prayer clings” to each home to remind you about this daily prayer. You can place this “prayer cling” on your mirror, or refrigerator, or computer screen, or window as a reminder to turn to God in prayer.

If God desires Central to build a new music suite to grow our music ministries and involve more children and youth in worship, if God desires us to preserve and improve our historic sanctuary to improve functionality, flexibility and accessibility, if God wants more people at Central involved in worship, God will stir hearts and people will be led to offer the necessary financial resources. All I ask us to do is faithfully pray the prayer and listen for God’s answer.

Ask God, “Lord, what do you want to do through me?”

This will be the seventh capital campaign my husband Deames and I have been through together. In our former experience with capital fund raising, we faithfully prayed this prayer together. We listened for God’s answer for a dollar amount to commit. Each time, when we disclosed to one another the amount God set upon our hearts, we were amazed how similar the number was. I confess, Deames number is usually a little higher than mine. He encourages me to step out in faith that God will provide the finances to fulfill our commitment. God has always done so. Even in seasons when we were burdened with other financial expenses. God provided for us so that we could provide for the church.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

The Great is Thy Faithfulness campaign is all about fulfilling God’s future for Central. God has been faithful to us in the past and God will be faithful to us in the future. We can trust God’s faithfulness. If we are faithful in prayer and obedient to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, God will do great things through our congregation. God will create more disciples for Jesus Christ, nourish and empower disciples in weekly worship and send them out to transform the world.

Pray Daily: “Lord, what do you want to do through me?”

Your Pastor,
Jan Davis
